As allies, there is a place for you in the work.
As an ally, you play a vital role in dismantling systemic racism within Canadian medicine. Silence in the face of injustice diminishes the presence of your Black colleagues and compromises patient safety.
Intervene in Real-Time: When you witness racial prejudice, step in. Clearly and firmly describe the colleague’s talents and state why the behaviour is intolerable.
Assume Responsibility: Use your privilege to advocate for Black patients and learners. Correct culturally insensitive language and ensure the accomplishments of Black physicians are properly recognized.
Validate Lived Experiences: Believe Black colleagues when they voice concerns. Avoid minimizing their challenges or retreating into "white fragility"—a state where racial stress triggers defensiveness rather than growth.
Educate Yourself: Take the initiative to learn about the social determinants of health and the specific barriers Black physicians encounter in Canada.
